What is Help-Seeking?

Help-seeking is the process of searching for support and assistance from those around us - friends and family or professionals.
Asking for help can be difficult sometimes.
There may be several reasons why you may not reach out for help from others;
However, when times are tough it can be harder to try to cope on your own. You may find that seeking help is not as difficult as you believe.
The following are potential sources of support to consider;

- You may be embarrassed or afraid to ask for help
- You may think that no one will understand
- You might believe no one will want to help
- You may worry about being judged
- You might think it is too costly to seek help
- You might not know where to go for help
However, when times are tough it can be harder to try to cope on your own. You may find that seeking help is not as difficult as you believe.
The following are potential sources of support to consider;
- Family and Friends
- Your Doctor
- Mental Health Professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists or counsellors)
- Telephone helplines and online resources
- Self-help and community groups
- Books and magazines

Online Mental Health Resources
There are a number of evidenced based online or app-based resources to support your mental health. Below are a list of resources you may find helpful. These resources are not designed as a replacement for individual psychotherapy with a qualified psychologist, however it may be of assistance as an adjunct to therapy (please discuss this with your therapist first) or as an interim intervention before accessing psychology services through Lumina Psychology.
